Project Overview

Network Upgrade Complete

Your network has been upgraded from a complex multi-switch configuration to a unified UniFi system with professional cloud-managed infrastructure.

What Changed

System Before After
Router/Controller Telstra modem (basic) UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra
Switching 3× separate switches (Dahua, TP-Link, 5-port PoE) UniFi Switch Lite 16 PoE
WiFi UniFi APs (unmanaged, no controller) UniFi APs (cloud-managed)
Comms Hub Unlabelled cables, multiple failure points All cables labelled, single PoE switch

Note: The CCTV, intercom, alarm, WiFi access points, and data cabling were installed by a previous contractor. We’ve now taken over network management and consolidated everything onto a properly managed system.

Recommendations

UPS Battery Backup – Comms Hub ~$199

Currently, if power goes out (or is tampered with), the CCTV system stops recording. A small UPS in the comms hub would keep CCTV recording during short outages.

UPS Battery Backup – NBN ~$150

A mini 12V Li-ion UPS specifically for the NBN NTD keeps internet running during brief power outages – useful for home automation, security cameras, and working from home.

Alarm 4G Module ~$350 + $220/yr

Upgrade the Bosch alarm to use a 4G SIM module for the MyAlarm app. Currently on the one-time plan with no ongoing costs – the $220/year plan includes a SIM card so the alarm always communicates with the app, even when power or internet is down. Lower priority since Peninsula Security monitoring already works via their own 4G – this is mainly for more reliable personal app control.

Phone Line Decommissioning SAVE ~$10/mth

If you’re no longer using your landline phone, you can call Telstra to have it removed and save the monthly fee. Note: Telstra typically keeps the number available for reactivation for around 6 months if you change your mind (this may vary – confirm with Telstra).

Aussie Broadband WHEN READY

Once everything is stable, we recommend switching from Telstra to Aussie Broadband. You’re currently on Telstra 500Mbps – we can match that speed at $110/month.

We’re an Aussie Broadband Enterprise Reseller

Switching through us gives you something no ISP can offer directly:

  • End-to-end management – we manage everything from the NBN connection through to your UniFi gear. Neither Telstra nor Aussie Broadband direct can do this.
  • Enterprise account – NBN prioritises enterprise connections for faster fault resolution
  • Direct support – call us directly for any internet issues, not a call centre
  • No finger-pointing – we own the whole solution, so there’s no “it’s not our problem” between ISP and network equipment
  • Simple switch – just need your Telstra bill with AVC number

You can also go with Aussie Broadband residential direct if you prefer – still recommended over Telstra for better support and value.

Next Steps

In Progress

  • Replacement WiFi AP ordered (to fix downstairs mesh situation)

Recommended for Next Visit PENDING

  • Install replacement WiFi AP (hardwired to resolve downstairs coverage)
  • Firmware upgrade CCTV system
  • Firmware upgrade intercom system

Network

UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra

Your network is now managed by a UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra – a professional-grade router with integrated network controller. This device provides:

Cloud management
Network security
Traffic insights
Remote access

UniFi Switch Lite 16 PoE

A single 16-port switch with Power over Ethernet replaces the three separate switches that were previously in the hub:

  • Dahua switch – now consolidated (intercom remains connected)
  • TP-Link switch – removed (was faulty, crashed network)
  • 5-port PoE switch – replaced (powered WiFi APs)

WiFi Access Points

Two existing UniFi WiFi 6 Professional ceiling access points (installed by previous contractor) provide coverage throughout the property. We adopted these onto our cloud controller for remote management:

Location Status Notes
Upstairs WIRED Primary AP, full speed
Downstairs (near hub) MESHING ~50Mbps via mesh (cable fault – replacement AP ordered)

Downstairs Cable Issue: The data cable to the original study location has a fault (gets PoE but no data) – this is an issue with the original cabling installation. The AP has been relocated near the Hills Hub and is meshing wirelessly. A replacement AP has been ordered and will resolve this.

Network Details

Connection NBN Fibre to the Premises (500/50 Mbps)
NTD Location Garage
Hub Location Hills Home Hub (downstairs cupboard)
Management Cloud-managed by Straight Forward Technology

CCTV

Existing Dahua CCTV system (installed by previous contractor) – now connected to the new UniFi switch.

Recommended NEXT VISIT

Firmware upgrade for CCTV system to ensure latest security patches and features.

Intercom

Existing Dahua video intercom system (installed by previous contractor):

2× Door stations
1× Internal monitor

Recommended NEXT VISIT

Firmware upgrade for intercom system to ensure latest security patches and features.

Alarm

Existing Bosch Solution 6000 alarm system (installed by previous contractor):

  • Monitoring: Peninsula Security (back-to-base via separate 4G)
  • App Control: iFob Control / MyAlarm (currently Ethernet-only)
  • Keypads: Garage & near front door

Note: The MyAlarm app currently connects via Ethernet. If power or internet goes out, you won’t receive app notifications (Peninsula Security monitoring still works via their separate 4G connection). See Recommendations section for 4G module upgrade option.
